Marmalade: A question of visual style in data visualization, workshop with the renowned Finnish information designer

A three-day data visualization workshop will explore the theme of indifference, alienation and apathy vs. interest, involvement and compassion. What quantifiable proxies can we use to measure such abstract sentiments, and how can we find and present patterns and insights within the data? We will work with an eclectic data set containing statistics, geodata, government spending figures, analyses of communication and cultural artifacts, and more.

Recommended for participants with a beginner or intermediate-level visualization and/or infographics skills, but anyone with a passion for the topic can apply. Basic knowledge of one or more programs such as Excel, Illustrator, Tableau, Flourish, Datawrapper, R, or QGIS is helpful, but not strictly required. Participants should bring their own laptops.

Juuso Koponen is co-founder at the information design studio Koponen+Hildén and author of the Data Visualization Handbook (Aalto ARTS Books, 2019). He teaches information design and data journalism at Aalto University, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, and other Finnish universities. His data visualization workshops have been hosted in Helsinki, Tampere, Lahti, Oulu, Lappeenranta, Tornio, Ljubljana, and Amsterdam.
